Problem

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) represents a crucial structure within the knee joint. on which the stability of the joint depends and is a structure involved in many daily movements. This important and continuous involvement in movements makes it a ligament highly susceptible to rupture during physical activities.

When the ACL sustains significant damage, it sets off a chain reaction of chronic health problems, including the premature onset of osteoarthritis, joint instability, meniscal tears and general joint dysfunction. In light of these multifactorial consequences, medical consensus generally leans towards promoting ACL reconstruction surgery.

The Project

Bioenthesis aims to improve the outcome of current ACL operations, through a medical device characterized by a collagen hydrogel matrix, to be used as a covering for the bioabsorbable screw placed in position during normal ligament reconstruction surgery. This innovative coating will be designed to create a more favorable interface between the screw and the bone, which will allow cells to migrate and find a preferable material to colonize and recreate a more natural-like enthesis (bone-ligament interface).
